Sliding glass roof light: case study

We were approached by Kier's, one of the UK's leading building contractors, for specification and design assistance for a specialist roof light requirement, for an exciting design and build project. "The Incubator" is the flagship building of Alconbury Enterprise Campus located on the former airfield, which is being transformed into a new high quality, low carbon Alconbury Weald development.

Designed by internationally renowned architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, the building will provide flexible inspiring space for small and start-up businesses, at the heart of the Alconbury Weald development. The building features a four-storey tower that both announces the site and offers a bird’s eye view across the emerging master plan from a roof terrace.

We provided detailed specification and design advice to Kier, for the roof top access to the viewing platform. A spiral staircase leads up to the roof terrace, and so we helped develop Kier's idea of a large sliding glass rooflight to provide comfortable roof top access.

The roof light needed to offer both excellent thermal performance and air tightness to comply with the high quality/low carbon design criteria for the building. We could offer Kier's complete peace of mind, as our PR60 roof glazing system (PDF brochure) is tested, certified and CE marked to EN 13830 for:
  • Water tightness against driving rain: EN 12154 / EN 12155 / RE 1950
  • Airtightness: EN 12152 / EN 12153 / AE 1950 Pa
  • Resistance to wind load: EN 13116 / EN 12179 / 2000 Pa permissible load & 3000 Pa increased load.
  • Verified heat transfer coefficient  of the installed system (Um/t) of 0.72 - 1.3 W/m2K*
  • Surface temperature factor fRSi of 0.66 - 0.83*
* = depending on glazing thickness.

Our team of expert roof glazing technicians developed the initial concept design into a set of full approval drawings within 7 working days. We designed a sliding over fixed rooflight to suit the 2.625 x 3.076m structural roof opening.

Once we obtained drawing approval, we manufactured and delivered the bespoke sliding roof access rooflight in under 8 weeks, and installed in just 2 days!!

EN 12101-2: CE marked smoke vent roof lights

In July 2013 under the Construction Product Regulation 2011 (CPR), it became a mandatory legal requirement for manufacturers to apply CE marking to all products covered by a harmonised European standard (hEN) or European Technical Assessment (ETA).

Smoke vents must be CE marked to EN 12101-2

We are amazed that nearly 6 months on, the majority of conversations we have with architects and other construction professionals, that no one seems to know much (if anything) about this topic.

Smoke vent roof lights (a.k.a.: Automatic Opening Vents or AOV) have been covered by EN 12101-2 since April 2004, and it is now a legal requirement that they must be tested and CE marked as a complete component i.e.: rooflight, upstand and actuation.

Our CE marked F100 smoke vent rooflight which
opens to 172° in less than 60 seconds.

It is NOT ok for any company to supply a smoke vent as a combination of components, for example: a separately CE marked rooflight combined with a separately CE marked actuator and claim CPR compliance - this is illegal.

It is also illegal for any supplier to simply claim compliance with Part B of the Building Regulations, with no EN 12101-2 certified CE marked product.

Smoke vent rooflights are life saving building products, and not something that should be left to chance or incorrectly specified. If in doubt, ask the supplier for a copy of their CE marking certification.

All of our smoke vents are fully tested, certified and CE marked to EN 12101-2 – ensuring complete compliance with the law.

An "insightful" day with RIBA.

D.V.S. subscribed to the RIBA Product Selector & NBS Plus services earlier this year, and so we jumped at the chance of attending a free consultation day in London yesterday (12/06/13).

Hosted by the RIBA Insight team at the Hilton Kensington Hotel, the day consisted of a full program of seminars, offering assistance and guidance to their subscribers to help maximise exposure and their R.O.I.

There was a diverse mix of seminar topics covering: the facts about B.I.M., how to engage an audience, creating and presenting compelling CPD, specification in action and getting the most from your RIBA Insight investment.

I particularly liked the fact the seminars were presented by a panel of industry experts, including representatives from product suppliers, marketing consultants, an architect, and members from the RIBA Insight team.

If your company subscribes to any of the RIBA Insight tools, you really should take advantage of their consultation days - they're FREE to attend and packed with useful information.

Were you also there yesterday? Have you ever attended one of RIBA Insight Consultation Days? If so, we'd love to hear your thoughts - please leave your comments below.

Passivhaus rooflight at Ecobuild, stand S928

We are extremely proud to announce that our FEenergysave rooflight will be on display for the first time in the UK, at Ecobuild 2013 - stand S928.

FEenergysave - come and see it at Ecobuild stand S928

Following independent assessment by the renowned Passivhaus Institute in Darmstadt, Germany - the FEenergysave is worlds only Passivhaus certified glass skylight for flat roof installation - a superior, thermally efficient rooflight component suitable for the premier low energy building standard.

The Building Centre asked for entries from companies offering energy saving products that are truly exciting for the construction industry, and that have proven their effectiveness in reducing a buildings carbon footprint. At Ecobuild this year, The Building Centre are creating a mini gallery on stand S928, that showcases just 8 of the industries most innovative products - and the FEenergysave was chosen for inclusion by impartial industry experts.

With many suppliers offering unsubstantiated claims in their literature of thermal efficiency, and of low "U-values", often to either an undefined standard or simply quoting the glazing only (Ug) value - we see this as a real opportunity to show visitors what sets our rooflights apart from the rest of the market.

Come and view our sample on stand S928 - Ecobuild is held at Excel, London from 5th - 7th March and is free to attend, but you do need to register: CLICK HERE.

Please let us know if you'd like more information on the FEenergysave, or any of our other premium rooflights, by commenting below or by sending us an email.

Passivhaus at Ecobuild 2013

As members of The Passivhaus Trust, it is very encouraging that Passivhaus is well and truly "on the agenda" at Ecobuild 2013.

Excel, London: 5th, 6th & 7th March 2013

Ecobuild is the world's biggest event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment, and so a growing Passivhaus presence can only be a good thing in our opinion.

The Passivhaus movement have its own dedicated 120 seated theatre (Seminar Room 1) where all of the Passivhaus seminars will be taking place over the 3 days. A full program of talks will examine why Passivhaus is a standard worth aiming for and the design and technical strategies needed to achieve it. The session also explores how Passivhaus interfaces with UK specific regulations and how it can be used on large projects.

In addition, The Passivhaus Trust have stand N351 which is diagonally opposite Seminar Room 1, which promises to be a great place to meet and discuss the superior low energy building standard, with the countries leading experts.

Ecobuild is held at Excel, London from 5th - 7th March and is free to attend, but you do need to register: CLICK HERE.

Thank you for reading this article, hopefully see you there?
